The Mousedeer Becomes a Judge

Once upon a time, there was a clever mousedeer who lived in the forest. He was known for his wit and cunning, and he often outsmarted other animals. One day, two men came to see King Solomon and complained that a hoe that one of them had borrowed from the other had been eaten by worms. The king was puzzled by this strange case and called the mousedeer to be the judge. The mousedeer went to the river and bathed in mud. Then he rolled in the dust and dried himself under the sun. He looked very old and wise with his gray fur.

The mousedeer came to the court and asked the two men to tell their story. The first man said that he had lent his hoe to the second man, but when he asked for it back, the second man said that it had been eaten by worms. The second man said that it was true and he had nothing to pay for the hoe. The mousedeer pretended to think hard and then said, "I have a solution. You, the borrower, must bring me a worm that can eat iron. And you, the lender, must bring me a hoe that can resist worms. If you can do that, I will decide who is right and who is wrong."

The two men were stunned by the mousedeer's request. They realized that they had been lying and cheating each other. They felt ashamed and confessed their faults. The first man admitted that he had sold the hoe and spent the money. The second man admitted that he had never borrowed the hoe and just wanted to get some money from the first man. The king was angry and ordered them to be punished. The mousedeer was praised for his cleverness and justice. He returned to the forest and continued his adventures.

Kancil Menjadi Hakim
